Outdoor travel bags and traditional travel bags are sold to different customers, and the difference is not styling — it is how much structure, protection and hardware each one needs. If you are adding an outdoor line to a travel range, this page sets out what actually changes in production, and what it costs.
We manufacture both types in Guangzhou at MOQ 50 pieces per style, in nylon, oxford, canvas, microfiber and genuine leather.
1. Weight is the first real difference
An outdoor travel bag has to be carried on a long walk, so every component is chosen for strength-to-weight: a lighter fabric, thinner but higher-denier reinforcement at the wear points, and minimal metal. A traditional travel bag can afford heavier hardware and a structured body because it is normally carried by car, train or a suitcase handle.
If your listing promises a lightweight bag, that promise is made at the specification stage. Ask for the finished weight in grams and have it checked on the production sample.
2. Back panel and suspension
This is where the cost is. An outdoor bag typically needs a padded, ventilated back panel, wider shoulder straps with load lifters, a sternum strap, and sometimes a hip belt that transfers weight off the shoulders. A traditional travel bag usually stops at thin padding and a luggage pass-through.
Both are buildable for us — the point is that these features change the internal structure, so they must be decided before the pattern is cut, not after.

3. Fabric and coating choices
- Oxford (600D and 1680D) — the workhorse for outdoor. Confirm the denier and whether the back is PU-coated or PVC-coated; they behave very differently in cold weather.
- Nylon ripstop — light and abrasion resistant, best for packs where grams matter.
- Waxed canvas — heavier, more expensive, and reads as heritage rather than technical. Popular with lifestyle outdoor brands.
- Microfiber and genuine leather — the premium travel end, where the bag is a business travel piece rather than a hiking pack.
If you sell into Russia, Scandinavia or Canada, ask specifically how the coating behaves below freezing: a film that turns stiff and cracks is a return waiting to happen. Water-repellent finishing and cold-flexible coatings are available.
4. Zippers, hardware and the wear points
Specify the zipper size and brand, whether sliders are lockable, and whether the main opening is a top-zip or a clamshell (a clamshell opens the whole front — easier to pack, easier for a thief). Reinforce the base and the strap anchors; those two places take almost all the abuse.
5. What to specify for a travel line
| Size and volume | Carry-on sizing for the airline you are targeting, and litres |
| Laptop fit | Internal sleeve dimensions in mm, not screen size |
| Opening | Top zip, clamshell or front flap |
| Carry | Backpack straps, detachable, or a shoulder strap only |
| Security | Lockable sliders, hidden pockets, RFID pocket |
| Branding | Embossed logo, metal plate, woven label, custom pullers |

6. Samples, minimums and QC
Pre-production samples take 3 to 5 days from a brief or from an existing product you send us, and you approve a physical piece before bulk production. MOQ is 50 pieces per style. Our defect rate is held under 2%, and every bag carries a 3-year warranty — see our QC checklist for what is inspected.
Frequently asked questions
Can the same pattern be made in both an outdoor and a traditional version?
Yes, and it is a common request: one body, two specifications. The back panel, strap construction and fabric change; the outer silhouette stays recognisable across your range.
What is the MOQ if I want two versions?
50 pieces per style. Two versions of the same body count as two styles.
Can you produce a bag that fits specific airline carry-on limits?
Yes — give us the dimensions of the airline you are targeting and we will build the pattern to that size.
