1. Start with the job the tote has to do
Retail handbag totes and promotional canvas totes are different products with different economics. Decide which you are buying before anything else:
- Retail tote — leather or microfiber, structured, with interior organisation, hardware and branding. Higher unit cost, higher price point, sold as fashion.
- Everyday / work tote — needs to carry a laptop, so specify the sleeve dimensions and make sure the base is reinforced and the handle anchors are load-bearing.
- Promotional or canvas tote — screen or digital printed, lighter construction, sold in volume. Here the weight of the canvas and the print method drive everything.
2. Material and weight specifiers that buyers should write down
- Canvas — specify the weight in gsm (10 oz and 12 oz are the usual range) and whether it is pre-shrunk. Untreated canvas can shrink after the first wash.
- Oxford and nylon — specify the denier (600D and 1680D behave very differently under load) and the coating if you need water repellency.
- Leather — specify the hide and thickness in millimetres. Tote handles should be built from a thicker cut than the body, or they will stretch.
- Microfiber leather — the most consistent option across a large run; ideal when your marketplace listing shows one photo for 500 units.
3. Construction details that decide durability
- Reinforced base with a base panel, feet, or both
- Handle attachment: stitched and riveted is stronger than either alone
- Gusset width — the difference between a flat tote and one that stands open
- Lining, and whether the interior has a zip pocket, slip pockets and a key leash
- Top closure: open, magnetic snap, or zip
4. Customisation for private label

5. Samples: 3 to 5 days, then bulk

You approve the physical piece — dimensions, material, hardware, handle construction and branding — before the order goes into production. That approval step is where money is saved: changing a pattern after bulk has started never is.
6. QC and warranty
