Messenger bags sit between two categories buyers usually source separately: a crossbody bag for retail, and a document bag for business customers. The difference is decided by three things — the flap, the strap anchor, and how the bag carries a load. We manufacture messenger bags in Guangzhou at MOQ 50 pieces per style, in genuine leather, crazy horse leather, microfiber, canvas and oxford.
1. Decide the size class first
- Small (under 30 cm) — phone, wallet, notebook. Sells as an everyday crossbody.
- Medium (33–38 cm) — the volume seller. Takes an A4 folder or a 13–14 inch laptop.
- Large (40 cm+) — 15.6 inch laptop plus documents. Where business customers and students overlap.
State the internal dimensions in millimetres rather than the laptop screen size, and decide early whether the laptop sits in a dedicated padded sleeve or in the main compartment — that changes the pattern.
2. The flap decides the perceived value
A full flap with twin buckles reads as premium and photographs well; a flap with a magnetic snap is faster to use and cheaper. A top zip under the flap is what buyers ask for when the bag will be used in crowded cities or on public transport. All three are available, and the closure choice must be locked in before the sample, because it changes both the pattern and the hardware list.
3. Strap anchors carry the load
This is where low-cost messenger bags fail. Ask for stitched and riveted anchors, and specify whether the strap is fixed or detachable — detachable straps with swivel clips let your customer replace a worn strap, which is worth mentioning in the listing. For larger styles, a webbing pad on the shoulder strap reduces the pressure point and is a cheap addition.

4. Materials by market
- Genuine cowhide and crazy horse — the premium route. Crazy horse in particular sells well into the US and EU where a vintage look is a feature rather than a defect.
- Microfiber leather — consistent colour and thickness across a large run, easy to clean, and the right choice when your marketplace listing shows one photo for hundreds of units.
- Waxed canvas, oxford and nylon — lighter, faster to produce, and better suited to campus and travel segments.
5. Interior specification
Messenger bags are compared on the inside: a padded laptop sleeve, a document section, one or two slip pockets for a phone and cards, a zip pocket, a pen loop and a key leash. A contrast lining makes listing photos look better and is a low-cost addition. Tell us the laptop model you are designing around and we will size the sleeve to it.
6. Private label options at 50 pieces
Embossed or foil-stamped logo, metal nameplate, embossed leather patch, woven or printed label, custom lining, custom zipper pullers, branded dust bag and hang tag. See private label leather bags for how these change with volume.
7. Samples, MOQ and QC
Pre-production samples take 3 to 5 days and you approve a physical piece before bulk production starts. MOQ is 50 pieces per style, splittable across colours. Our defect rate is held under 2% and every bag carries a 3-year warranty — the full inspection list is in our QC checklist.
Frequently asked questions
What is your MOQ for messenger bags?
50 pieces per style, and you can split that across colours. Reorders of an approved style start from the same figure.
Can you make a messenger bag to my own design?
Yes. Send sketches or photos with measurements and we will produce a written specification and a sample for your approval. Customising an existing style has a shorter sample window than a completely new pattern.
Do you supply bags ready for Amazon or marketplace fulfilment?
Yes — individual polybags, barcodes, carton and pallet markings to your specification. See the US Amazon case study.
