Briefcases are the least forgiving category to source badly: a crooked handle or an edge that starts lifting after two months is visible from across a room. We manufacture briefcases and laptop bags in Guangzhou at MOQ 50 pieces per style, in genuine cowhide, crazy horse leather and microfiber, and this page covers what to specify before you order.
1. Decide structured or soft before you choose the leather
A structured briefcase holds a rectangular silhouette and needs a stiffened body, a reinforced base and edge painting. A soft briefcase folds with the contents and can be built from softer-temper hides with folded edges. They use different patterns, different interlining and different leather temper — choosing after the leather is selected is how projects end up needing a second sample.
For a first order, structured styles photograph better and read as more expensive in listings. Soft styles are more forgiving to ship and more comfortable for daily commuters.
2. Leather selection that matches the price bracket
- Full-grain and top-grain cowhide — the top of the range. Natural markings, ages into a patina, accepts embossing cleanly. Expect the highest unit cost and the strongest perceived value.
- Crazy horse leather — pull-up finish that lightens where it bends. Very popular in the US and EU for vintage-looking satchels and messenger-style briefcases.
- Microfiber leather — uniform colour and thickness across the run, no natural variation between pieces, easier to clean. A reliable choice for corporate gifting and volume programmes where consistency matters more than patina.
3. The internal layout is a selling feature
Buyers of business bags compare interiors. Specify: a padded laptop sleeve with its internal dimensions in millimetres, an A4 document section, a tablet pocket, pen loops, card slots and a key leash. Tell us the laptop model you are designing around — building to screen size alone is the most common sourcing mistake in this category.

4. Handles, straps and hardware
- Handle construction: rolled and stitched, or flat with a stitched seam — and where the anchors are reinforced, because handles carry the full weight
- Detachable shoulder strap with swivel clips, or fixed
- Closure: zip, twin buckles, tuck lock or a combination; lockable sliders if you sell to commuters
- Hardware finish: brushed nickel, antique brass, matte black or gold — matched across every piece in the order
5. Edge finishing: the detail that separates a good sample from a good run
Painted edges (edge coat, sanded and painted in two or three passes) give the crisp look most premium briefcases have. Folded and stitched edges are more durable in hard daily use. Both are available; the important thing is consistency across all 50 pieces, which is a QC matter rather than a design one. Our QC checklist lists what we check on edge paint, stitch tension and logo placement.
6. Branding options at 50 pieces
Embossed or debossed logo, foil stamping, a metal nameplate, an embossed leather patch, custom lining with your print, and custom zipper pullers. Metal plates and embossing are the two most requested on briefcases because they photograph well and survive daily use. See private label leather bags for what changes as volume grows.
7. Samples, minimums and QC
Pre-production samples take 3 to 5 days, and you approve the physical sample before bulk production begins. MOQ is 50 pieces per style. Our defect rate is held under 2%, and every briefcase we manufacture carries a 3-year warranty against defects in workmanship and materials.
Frequently asked questions
Can you produce a briefcase from my own drawings?
Yes. Send sketches or photos with measurements and we will convert them into a written specification — materials, thickness, hardware list, lining, edge finish and dimensions — before making the sample. A fully new pattern needs a slightly longer sample window than customising an existing style.
How much does a leather briefcase cost?
It depends mostly on the leather and the internal structure. Send the specification and quantity and you will get an itemised price within 24 hours. Wholesale pricing explains what moves the number.
Do you handle logo placement on both the product and the packaging?
Yes, including debossed logos, metal plates, dust bags, hang tags and cartons.
